Through Resolution 0808 of June 2024, the Colombian Ministry of Justice and Law authorized the Universidad de La Guajira to create the Conciliation Center as a body attached to the Legal Clinic, which has been operating for 5 years and through which the Alma Mater provides free legal assistance to vulnerable populations in the department as part of its social function.
The approval of this new body was the result of the process carried out by Uniguajira before the aforementioned ministerial portfolio. Initially, the request was presented, through which the interest in creating this mediation entity was expressed, accompanied by the certifications of existence and legal representation and all documentation that supports that the educational institution has the physical and human infrastructure for this purpose, under the conditions and requirements established by law.
“This is undoubtedly a transcendental achievement for our university because it not only demonstrates the competencies of our strata in the different branches of law, but also the institutional conditions to continue assuming this commitment to society and now, we will advance from legal assistance to conflict resolution through conciliation.”
The director of the Legal Clinic, Carmen Palmarrosa Brugés, said.
It is important to mention that Law 2220 of 2022 regulates the creation and operation of this type of entities, which aim to provide quality conciliation services and generate agreements that satisfy the parties involved in the resolution of conflicts, which contributes to the construction of the social fabric and empowers the academy as an instrument of peace in the region.
In this regard, the new Conciliation Center will enable the resolution of conflicts in an agile and efficient manner; it will also offer the university community and the population of strata 1, 2 and 3, as well as people with disabilities, the opportunity to resolve disputes without resorting to formal judicial processes. It will also facilitate access to justice and generate conditions for dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
With the approval of the Conciliation Center of Uniguajira, the higher education institution advances in the strengthening of its services for the community, as well as in the creation of spaces to improve the training of the students of the Law program.
