The University of La Guajira is an autonomous university entity of state character, of cultural public service, open, participatory, pluralistic and humanist, of departmental order created on November 12, 1976 by Decree 523 of the Governor's Office in compliance with Ordinances 011 and 022 of 1975.

It was recognized as a university by Resolution No. 1770 of June 24, 1995 of the Ministry of National Education with its main domicile in the city of Riohacha in the department of La Guajira-Republic of Colombia, and its radius of action may be extended to the national territory, through the creation of branches, extensions, sub-branches and social projection centers.

Uniguajira enjoys academic, administrative, financial and budgetary autonomy, legal personality and its own independent patrimony. Likewise, it can be extended to the international level in the academic programs that the institution leads.

Our Mission

To train integral professionals who perceive, apprehend, generate, apply and transform knowledge within a framework of cultural diversity through their own activities (teaching, research, social outreach and extension) to meet the needs of sustainable and sustainable development of the Guajira society and its environment, with special emphasis on the self-recognition of multicultural conditions with a view to the development of the integral personality of all its institutional actors and the community in general to achieve intercultural conditions.

Our Vision

By 2030, the University of La Guajira will be the center of regional culture, with local, national and international recognition for the achievement of quality accreditation of its academic and institutional programs; It will train people with integrity, dedication, vocation and commitment to social service through teaching and research, committed to the generation and ethical application of science to solve the problems of the environment in order to contribute to improving the quality of life of citizens, according to the demands of its proximity to the borders, for which it will make agreements and inter-institutional exchanges, close border, international in the face of the demands of globalization.

The ultimate purpose of the University of La Guajira is to offer higher education programs (undergraduate and graduate), to the population that requires it after graduating from high school, whether in the department, the region or the nation.

This final purpose has in itself processes that allow it to be achieved through institutional objectives that start from the mission and have as a goal the vision of the institution that has been set for the year 2030.

The processes derived from the fulfillment of the mission with a view to achieving the vision, involve the entire institutional operationalization and therefore must be implicit in the daily work of the University. Therefore, as institutional objectives, the following are proposed:

  1. To form, in higher education, the student body of the University of La Guajira, in an integral manner and in the diversity of the region and the nation.
  2. Contribute to the satisfaction of the social, economic and cultural needs of the multicultural environment of the Guajira and Caribbean society.
  3. To carry out permanent collective and collaborative work with the participation of academia, the administration of the University of La Guajira and the society of its influence, in order to achieve the highest levels of educational quality in the region and the nation.
  4. To make scientific research and its results a resource for the solution of environmental problems, seeking the welfare of citizens.
