About Uniguajira

The University of La Guajira is an autonomous university entity of state character, of cultural public service, open, participatory, pluralistic and humanist, of departmental order created on November 12, 1976 by Decree 523 of the Governor's Office in compliance with Ordinances 011 and 022 of 1975.

It was recognized as a university by Resolution No. 1770 of June 24, 1995 of the Ministry of National Education with its main domicile in the city of Riohacha in the department of La Guajira-Republic of Colombia, and its radius of action may be extended to the national territory, through the creation of branches, extensions, sub-branches and social projection centers.

Uniguajira enjoys academic, administrative, financial and budgetary autonomy, legal personality and its own independent patrimony. Likewise, it can be extended to the international level in the academic programs that the institution leads.

Our Mission

To train integral professionals who perceive, apprehend, generate, apply and transform knowledge within a framework of cultural diversity through their own activities (teaching, research, social outreach and extension) to meet the needs of sustainable and sustainable development of the Guajira society and its environment, with special emphasis on the self-recognition of multicultural conditions with a view to the development of the integral personality of all its institutional actors and the community in general to achieve intercultural conditions.

Our Vision

By 2030, the University of La Guajira will be the center of regional culture, with local, national and international recognition for the achievement of quality accreditation of its academic and institutional programs; It will train people with integrity, dedication, vocation and commitment to social service through teaching and research, committed to the generation and ethical application of science to solve the problems of the environment in order to contribute to improving the quality of life of citizens, according to the demands of its proximity to the borders, for which it will make agreements and inter-institutional exchanges, close border, international in the face of the demands of globalization.

The ultimate purpose of the University of La Guajira is to offer higher education programs (undergraduate and graduate), to the population that requires it after graduating from high school, whether in the department, the region or the nation.

This final purpose has in itself processes that allow it to be achieved through institutional objectives that start from the mission and have as a goal the vision of the institution that has been set for the year 2030.

The processes derived from the fulfillment of the mission with a view to achieving the vision, involve the entire institutional operationalization and therefore must be implicit in the daily work of the University. Therefore, as institutional objectives, the following are proposed:

To form, in higher education, the student body of the University of La Guajira, in an integral manner and in the diversity of the region and the nation.
Contribute to the satisfaction of the social, economic and cultural needs of the multicultural environment of the Guajira and Caribbean society.
To carry out permanent collective and collaborative work with the participation of academia, the administration of the University of La Guajira and the society of its influence, in order to achieve the highest levels of educational quality in the region and the nation.
To make scientific research and its results a resource for the solution of environmental problems, seeking the welfare of citizens.

The University of La Guajira adopts, for its academic project and its institutional dynamics, the following aims and objectives contemplated in Law 30 of 1992:

To form people with a humanistic sense, peace promoters at the service of society, committed to democratic values, civil rights and human rights.
Form and consolidate academic communities capable of articulating with their national and international counterparts.
Promote, through research, teaching and extension activities, the preservation and rational use of the environment and foster the consolidation of an adequate ecological culture.
To advance programs and projects aimed at promoting the development of an entrepreneurial spirit with a clear awareness of its social responsibility, both in the public and private sectors.
Continuously evaluate the multiple elements of academic and administrative life, taking into account the social interest, regional and national planning objectives, and the scientific and pedagogical relevance of the various programs.
Strengthen and keep institutional management up to date.
To generate and disseminate a culture of respect for human rights through the adoption of attitudes and practices that favor the formation and progress of civil society.
To study and preserve cultural, ethnic, historical and regional manifestations in order to reinterpret their social significance.
Adapt, promote and generate knowledge in science and technology to guide decisions for the benefit of social development.
To stimulate the formation of groups for research and institutional development on a scientific, ethical and humanistic basis that allows them to position themselves with authority in the face of the requirements and needs of the times.
Implement significant pedagogical styles from the different faculties for the development of teaching, research and social projection.
To position its image within the national and international academic community through research studies and social action projects.
Promote the linkage of the productive sector as well as state agencies to contribute to the orientation of thinking for the benefit of society.
To promote the production and reproduction of knowledge and its use in the solution of the social needs of the region and the country.
Promote research and interdisciplinary studies on the processes of globalization, regionalization, Latin American and Caribbean integration in their economic, social, cultural, ecological and political aspects, as a basis for inter-institutional cooperation and collaboration programs at the regional level.
Contribute to improving and transforming administrative and financial management through the adoption of appropriate policies.
Assume the challenge of participating decisively in the qualitative improvement of its basic functions, seeking to ensure the training of its teachers, the transformation of students into active agents of their own learning and the promotion of socio-educational research.
To promote academic and professional mobility in order to foster the process of educational, political and cultural integration in the region.
To provide the community with a quality service, which refers to the academic results, the means and processes used, the institutional infrastructure, the qualitative and quantitative dimensions of the service and the conditions in which it is developed.

Advise in the construction and execution of programs, plans and projects for the management and overcoming of poverty, migration, victims and local development.
