In order to analyze the impact of the Temporary Statute of Protection for Venezuelans on their labor integration, Universidad de La Guajira professors Karen Almanza Vides, Meudis Quintero Ramos and students Héctor Rivera and Jonathan Hernández, conducted a research on this population in the municipality of Maicao focused on the variables of living wage, labor factors, health, social protection, equal opportunities and training for skills development.
The results of the study provide a detailed view of how the status has influenced the quality of employment and working conditions of migrants, with the aim of promoting a decent and dignified occupation for Venezuelan citizens who face not only difficulties but also a precarious position.
One of the researchers of the Pangea group, Karen Almanza Vides, stressed that the importance of addressing this issue is that it allows finding solutions to improve the living conditions of Venezuelan migrants in Maicao and protect their human rights. “Given the vulnerable situation of this population, it is essential to implement measures that guarantee their labor integration in a dignified and fair manner,” she said.
Likewise, student Jonathan Hernández commented that “the study will allow us to understand how the status affects access to employment, income and living conditions. Therefore, it is necessary for the government, with international cooperation alliances, to create strategies that contribute to local development and at the same time promote the inclusion of migrants in the labor market.
He also stated that the research was carried out during one year. “The pilot test was carried out in the neighborhoods of Centro and La Pista in the municipality of Maicao, where the results showed that the possession of the Temporary Protection Permit (PPT) does not guarantee access to rights, showing significant percentages of cases of discrimination, lack of welfare in food, clothing and housing, as well as stability and job security of these people,” concluded the university professor.
This type of initiative ratifies the role of students and teachers of Uniguajira as guarantors of the production of information that supports the making of correct decisions regarding the problems that affect the Guajira population and Venezuelan migrants living in the department.
