The Wayuu language or Wayuunaiki is the most important indigenous language in Colombia and Venezuela due to its high number of speakers. It is also one of the most important indigenous languages in all of the Americas, after Guaraní́, Quechua, Aymara, Náhuatl, Mayan, which are spoken by millions. Wayuunaiki, spoken by some 500,000 people in the Guajira Peninsula and surrounding areas, has recently seen a descriptive boom that has been objectified in books, master's and doctoral theses, articles in academic publications and various undergraduate and graduate courses. Parallel to this, a veritable army of teachers has been trained, both from the Wayuu ethnic group and the Creole population, who provide their services to the Wayuu children and youth in intercultural bilingual education or ethno-education programs, thanks to the training received by the University of La Guajira in Colombia and the Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador in Venezuela.
The University of La Guajira, through the Bachelor's Degree Program in Ethnoeducation and Interculturality, seeks to energize the academy with the opening of the Diploma Course Description of the grammar and teaching of Wayuunaiki, which aims firstly to provide attention to the updating and improvement of ethno-educational and bilingual teaching practice and, secondly, to contribute and strengthen the quality of education in the department from the recognition of the value of cultural and linguistic differentiation.
